Nobody Claps for Receipts: The Unglamorous Setup That Protects Your First $10K

Here's a scene that plays out every April in America: a creator who crushed it last year — six figures of VIP subscriptions, brand deals, digital product sales — sits down with an accountant and discovers they owe more than expected, can't find half their records, and spent money on things they didn't know they could deduct.

Nobody makes content about this part. But this part is what turns a creator into a business owner.

First: You Owe Taxes on All of It

Let's kill the biggest myth right away. That $800 from your bio link page, the $200 in TikTok Creator Fund payouts, the free product a brand sent you — if it's income, it's taxable. The platform might not send you a 1099 unless you cross certain thresholds, but the IRS doesn't care whether you got paperwork. You owe taxes on every dollar from dollar one.

The good news: you also get to deduct legitimate business expenses. Your ring light, editing software, the portion of your internet bill used for work, that course you bought on funnels. But you can only deduct what you tracked.

Do You Need an LLC?

Short answer: not on day one, but probably by your first $10K.

An LLC (limited liability company) does two things for you. First, it separates your business liabilities from your personal assets — meaning if someone sues over your business, your car and your savings aren't automatically on the table. Second, it makes your operation look and function like a real company, which matters for business bank accounts and certain payment processors.

LLC formation costs vary by state — anywhere from about $50 in Kentucky to $500 in Massachusetts — plus many states charge an annual fee. You can file yourself through your Secretary of State's website or use a formation service. One LLC, filed once, protecting everything you build after. For most creators earning real money, it's a no-brainer.

Once you have an LLC, get an EIN (free from the IRS website) and open a dedicated business checking account. Commingling funds is the fastest way to lose your liability protection and your mind at tax time.

Track Everything, From Everywhere

Creator income is messy by nature. It dribbles in from your bio link platform, YouTube, Patreon-style memberships, affiliate links, brand deals via PayPal, maybe a Venmo here and there.

Your job is to make it un-messy:

Sales Tax: The Trap Nobody Warns You About

If you sell digital products — presets, ebooks, courses — through your own checkout, sales tax gets weird. In the US, whether you owe sales tax on a digital product depends on the buyer's state, and a handful of states (like Texas and New York) tax digital goods while others don't.

The simple fix: sell digital products through platforms that handle sales tax collection for you — most major checkout and bio link platforms do. If you're big enough to run your own checkout, you're big enough to talk to a tax professional about economic nexus rules, which kick in when you cross state-specific sales thresholds (often $100K, but sometimes lower).

Payout Schedules: Choose on Purpose

Most platforms let you pick payout frequency — daily, weekly, monthly. Two rules of thumb:

The Boring Payoff

None of this is going to trend. Nobody's making a Reel about quarterly estimated taxes (due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15, by the way — mark them now).

But here's what the boring stuff buys you: the ability to reinvest in your business without panic, deductions that legally shrink your bill, and the calm of knowing that when your bio link finally prints money, the money is actually yours to keep.

Build the boring machine. It's what the fun stuff runs on.
